Day 1Arrival Lhasa

Be transferred from Lhasa Gonggar Airport to the Tsedang

Meals: No meals
Recommended Hotel: In Tsedang

Arrive at Lhasa Gonggar Airport, be met by the YUNSKY guide and transferred directly to Tsedang, where about 100km away from the airport. Enjoy the rest of the time by your own arrangement and acclimate the high altitude meanwhile. Stay overnight at Tsedang.

A trip to Lhasa would be incomplete without a visit to Potala Palace, the landmark of the city, and the spiritual center of Tibet – Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street, which is a famous commercial and commodity-distributing center in Lhasa, consisting of more than 120 handicrafts shops and more than 200 stalls.

Drepung Monastery, Norbulingka, Sera Monastery

After breakfast, you will take a short visit to Drepung Monastery, a Yellow Hat Sect where the Dalai Lamas were trained, and on to Norbulingka Park, the former summer palace of the 7th Dalai Lama which now houses a small zoo of rare mountain animals. Also visit Sera Monastery where the monks can be seen in red robes and curved yellow hats.

Day 6Lhasa – Shigatse

Yamdrok Lake, Coach to Gyangtse, Pelkor Chode Monastery, Coach to Shigatse

Drive to Gyantse crossing the Khamba La (4790 metres) from where you can see one of the four Sacred Lakes – Yamdrok Lake, and huge mountain ranges. Visit the Pelkor Chode Monastery afterwards. Then continue your driving to Shigatse. When arrival Shigatse downtown, have rest of this day in your hotel.

Day 7Shigatse – Tingri

Tashilhumpo Monastery, Sakya Monastery, Coach to Tingri

In the morning, you will enjoy a visiting to famous Tashilhunpo Monastery – one of the six big monasteries in Tibet which is the seat of the Panchen Lama. After that, drive to visit Sakya Monastery – the principal monastery of the Sakyapa Sect of Tibetan Buddhism. And then, continue your driving to Tingri. You will arrival Tingri around the evening. Stay overnight at Tingri. Even though the hotel is simple, the people are very friendly.

Day 8Tingri – Mt. Everest Base Camp – Tingri

Although it's just 100km from Tingri to Mount Everest Base Camp (5200m), it takes about 4 hours since the cracked winding roads demand much caution. But the views are stupendous on a clear day, and feature a huge sweep of the Himalaya range including peaks over 8000, Makalu, Lhotse, Everest, Gyachung and Cho Oyu. When you finally get to Base Camp, the first sight of the mighty Everest simply leaves you speechless. All the hardship you bear along the way makes sense at this while. The best moments to watch Mt. Everest's are early morning and late evening when Everest is shining like a goddess in the sunglow.

Day 9Tingri – Gyirong

Drive to Gyirong ( 330km, around 7 hours driving), and stay overnight there. Though you will spend much time on driving, it is not a boring one. During the way, you can enjoy the spectacular highland scenery through the windows, and you may also take a far view of local villages/towns along. Enroute, you will also have chance to view Peygutso, which is a beautiful highland lake at the foot of Mt. Everest.

Day 10Departure Gyirong to Nepal

Pass Gyirong Border and depart from Tibet to Nepal

Pass Gyirong Border and depart from Tibet to Nepal. You could take public bus from Gyirong to Kathmandu. (There are buses from Gyirong to Kathmandu. It is about 100km with bumpy road from Gyirong to Kathmandu. It takes about 10 hours by driving)

For Nepal Visa

After clearing the Customs at Gyirong Border and before stepping into Nepal, tourists are requested to apply for a Nepal visa. The visa is valid for 15 days, 30 days and 90 days. Visa with different validity is at difference price from USD25 to USD100. Tourists need to prepare valid passport and 2 passport photos, as well as some USD cashes in advance.

How to get to Kathmandu from the border

Gyirong is the border between Tibet, China and Nepal. Arriving at Gyirong Border, you just go through the formalities of China Customs and apply for your Nepali visa before you land Nepal. There are buses to Kathmandu. Suggest you depart from China in the morning, then you can arrive at Kathmandu at night.

The better option is to hire a vehicle from Nepali immigration area. A ride to Kathmandu takes about 10 hours due to the bumpy road. And if you need we could ask our partner in Nepal side to pick you up at the border and transfer you to your hotel in Kathmandu which needs early reservation.

Nepal is an odd 2.25 hours behind Chinese time.

We were looking for a tour in SW China while in the area for work and found this one. While we wouldn't normally get a private tour but surprisingly it was actually cheaper than most of the group tours in the area and was great value. While I would usually rather keep one guide for the whole tour, as you get to know each other and they get to know what you are interested in, we changed guides 5 times during this trip (fortunately we had the same guide in Kunming at the start and end of the tour which was a real bonus as Murphy, our Kunming based guide, was excellent.) In this case changing guides had the advantage of local knowledge at each site so compensated for the change. Of the 4 guides we had 3 excellent and 1 very good with each of them working hard to look after us and make sure we enjoyed our trip. Vicky, our Dali based guide was also extremely good making our time there a highlight. The tour gives you 2 days at each base ie travel in the morning, have the afternoon and the next day touring the area then drive to the next base. We chose the driving tour as we feel it gives you a better experience of the area and you get to see the locals in action. All the drivers we had were great – they went out of their way to look after us and were very safe, which is saying something for driving in China. While all of the guides were very fluent in English none of the drivers could speak English which was a slight disadvantage as you didn't have the guides with you when traveling between bases but the friendliness and helpfulness of the drivers more than made up for this.
The tour was very well organised and we knew what we were doing from the time we met our guide on arrival at the Kunming railway station to when we walked through security at the airport on our way out. The tour comes with 4,5 and 6 star accommodation choices and we went for the cheapest 4 star option. While the English at the hotels was limited the guides made sure we were checked in and out and took care of any issues (which were minimal). The 4 star option is largely “Chinese style” hotels ie designed for Chinese visitors with breakfast consisting of what many westeners would consider dinner style food but there was always eggs and toast for the less adventurous. The hotels were all clean and comfortable and generally very well located. The Hotel in Kunming (Jin Jang Inn) was a bonus as it seemed higher than 4 star and we stayed there both on our way in and out. As well as breakfast, lunch came with the tour which was enjoyable as the guides choose the restaurants so we got a variety. I got the feeling that most of the restaurants were owned by friends or family or there was some arrangement with the guide, but as you get to formally review each guide and the meals at the end of each stop they work hard to make sure you enjoy the meal and there was always an abundance of food. We tried a range of local cuisine and there was only one meal we didn't think was up to par. You get your own dinner which also suited us as there is invariably a range of restaurants or for the more adventurous there is the street vendors and you can choose what you want. The vehicles we were driven in were all very good- plenty of space and very comfortable.
Being a private tour, while there was a set itinerary, which was diverse and very interesting with something for most people, the guides could tweak it to suit individual interests eg more time at one site and less at another. It is easy to get a bit templed out but overall the itinerary was a good mic of nature and culture. I would thoroughly recommend the tour and the company and we will be looking to the company if/when we go back – Guilin is next on the list as the guides were very happy to discus what they thought we would and wouldn't enjoy based on working with us on this tour,
