Shanhaiguan belongs to a larger defensive system rather than a stand-alone monument; compare it with other passes, towers and garrisons instead of ranking it only by a slogan.
Walking plan: treat Laolongtou and Shanhaiguan as two managed attractions connected by local transport or a deliberately researched urban route. Do not assume that a continuous walk on top of the wall is open between them. The surviving line is interrupted by modern roads, settlements and areas with different access rules. This coastal sector is best understood within the Ming Great Wall system.
How to arrange the day: base the trip in Qinhuangdao or Shanhaiguan, confirm each site's current entry window and decide whether to visit the coast or the pass first. Rail services to Qinhuangdao and Shanhaiguan change by date, so check the official booking platform rather than copying a fixed train count from an old article. Leave time for the city transfer and for separate ticket checks.
Responsible access: camping on or beside protected structures should not be assumed to be permitted. Use designated accommodation and public viewing areas for sunrise or sunset. Keep off parapets, do not remove brick fragments and obey coastal weather closures. Sea wind, rain and winter ice can make apparently level masonry hazardous.
