Historical and Cultural Cities in China

China's national historical and cultural city designation recognizes places with especially significant historic fabric, cultural remains or revolutionary heritage. It is a conservation designation approved through government procedures, not simply a list of attractive old towns. A city may contain protected street patterns, monuments and living neighborhoods while also functioning as a modern urban center.

The provincial table below preserves a useful regional overview, but it should not be treated as a frozen current register. New designations can be approved and names or administrative status can change. Before planning, confirm the latest State Council or heritage-authority information and then investigate what survives on the ground: an ancient wall, a historic district, archaeological museum and nearby sacred landscape may require very different visiting methods.
