Xi'an offers paper-cutting, shadow puppets, sancai-style ceramics, Terracotta Army replicas, rubbings and contemporary craft. Choose by maker, material and intended use—not by a claim that every old-looking object is local or ancient. Reviewed August 28, 2026; combine shopping with the

Around Muslim Street, expect food and general souvenirs; for calligraphy and craft browsing, Shuyuanmen is usually the more relevant zone. Compare several sellers, ask who made the item and request the material, technique and price on the receipt.
• Shaanxi Paper-Cutting
Shaanxi paper-cuts are part of a living Chinese tradition used for festivals, family occasions and visual storytelling. Style varies by county and maker; bold forms and fine cuts can both be authentic creative choices. Ask whether the work was hand-cut, knife-cut from stacked sheets, laser-cut or printed. Look at how narrow bridges keep the design connected and whether repeated sheets are near-identical because they were cut as a stack. Request the maker's name and the meaning of the motif in their own words; a shop's generic zodiac explanation may not reflect the artist's intent.
Buy flat work in an acid-free sleeve and ask the artist or cooperative for a name and location. A generic red zodiac design is not automatically made in northern Shaanxi. Keep paper between rigid boards, away from adhesive tape, moisture and direct sunlight. If you watch a demonstration, avoid touching the work surface and ask before recording the artist. Contemporary subjects and new color choices do not make the practice less authentic when the maker is transparent.
• Shadow Puppetry
Shaanxi shadow puppetry combines carved translucent figures, music, voices and screen performance. A souvenir puppet may be leather, synthetic sheet or paper; ask which material was used and whether it was made for performance or decoration. Avoid wildlife-derived or unidentified leather. Check that joints articulate without tearing, rods are secure and pigments do not flake. A complete stage character can include several connected parts; loose decorative panels may be intentionally simplified. A performance ticket, workshop visit or named artisan provides better cultural context than a mass-produced figure with no origin.
• Tang Sancai-Style Ceramics
Tang sancai refers to low-fired, lead-glazed wares associated especially with the Tang period; “three colors” describes a palette, not a rule that every object has exactly three. Most retail figures are modern reproductions.
Choose a clearly labeled reproduction, inspect cracks and repairs, and do not use decorative glaze ware for food unless the maker explicitly certifies it as food-safe. Pack projecting ears, tails and legs separately from pressure. Examine the foot and unglazed areas for construction clues, but do not scratch a shop object. Modern workshop pieces can be slip-cast, molded and hand-finished in different combinations; ask the seller to distinguish those steps. A deliberate aged surface or dynasty-style form is design, not evidence of archaeological age.
• Terracotta Army Replicas
A museum-authorized or clearly documented modern replica makes an honest souvenir; an “excavated” figure is a warning sign, not a premium. Museum shops may identify the warrior type or pose represented. Elsewhere, compare proportions and finish without accepting a claim that the replica came from the same clay or kiln as the archaeological figures. Replicas should remain clearly distinguishable from cultural relics in both description and paperwork.

. Match the exact figure and size to the box before payment. Ask whether the piece is molded, hand-finished or hand-modeled, and record the workshop. Color and clay alone cannot prove a link to the archaeological site.
• Calligraphy and Rubbings
Xi'an's Forest of Stone Steles gives rubbings important cultural context, but retail sheets vary from authorized reproductions to modern printed simulations. Ask what monument or inscription is represented, when the impression was made and whether sale and export are lawful.
Museum shops and established studios provide stronger documentation than an anonymous “old rubbing.” Do not buy a claimed cultural relic without independent expertise and the required export process. Inspect paper for tears, mould, tape, fading and recent artificial staining. Ask whether the sheet is an ink rubbing, a printed facsimile or a digital reproduction. For calligraphy, distinguish an original work, a copy after a master and a mechanically printed signature; the three can all be legitimate when accurately labeled.
• Wheat-Straw Pictures
Contemporary wheat-straw pictures use split, flattened and arranged plant material to create tonal and reflective designs. The fantastic tomb story in the former copy could not be verified and has been removed.
Inspect adhesion, edge lifting, discoloration and backing. Because untreated plant material can face quarantine restrictions, confirm how it was processed and whether your destination permits it. Ask whether the sheen comes from the natural direction of the straw, applied color or a protective coating. A rigid flat box prevents crushing better than a rolled package. Keep the work dry and away from insects after purchase.
A named studio and a clear technique description are more useful than an unsupported claim of ancient rediscovery.
• Lantian Jade
Lantian jade is historically associated with Shaanxi, but color, translucency and a local shop address do not identify a specimen.
Ask for the mineral description, treatments, origin claim, weight and return terms. For a consequential purchase, use an independent accredited gem report. Do not repeat the unsupported claim that a specific imperial seal was made from the item in front of you. Compare the laboratory report number, dimensions and weight with the actual piece. A flashlight, sound test or seller's certificate cannot identify every jade-like material. Check bracelets for internal fractures near drilled or thin areas, and confirm whether metal fittings are plated or solid.
Local Food Specialties
Good travel choices include sealed Shaanxi nuts, date or pomegranate products, pastries and other labeled foods. Check ingredients, allergens, production date and storage. Buy cooked street foods to eat locally; fresh fruit, meat and seeds may be restricted at your destination. Compare net weight, not box size, and avoid a package with a broken vacuum, oil seepage or missing producer details. If a shop offers a tasting, make sure the sealed product has the same recipe and date range as the sample.
• Lintong Persimmon Cake
Persimmon cakes are a seasonal Xi'an snack made with persimmon-enriched dough and sweet fillings that vary by vendor. Ask about nuts, sesame, rose, lard and other allergens or dietary concerns. Eat freshly cooked versions while hot; choose factory-sealed products for travel.
The popular Li Zicheng origin story belongs to local food lore and should not be presented as established fact without evidence. Flavor, clean handling and transparent ingredients matter more than a dramatic legend.
• Xi'an Thick Rice Wine
Choujiu is a cloudy, lightly alcoholic fermented rice drink, often flavored with osmanthus. Strength and storage differ by producer; it is not alcohol-free merely because it tastes sweet. Some versions are served warm with food, while bottled products are intended for retail transport. Ask whether the bottle is pasteurized, whether sediment is expected and how long it can remain unrefrigerated. People who avoid alcohol for health, religious or legal reasons should read the label rather than infer from the English name “rice wine.”
