Lhasa Gonggar Airport

Lhasa Gonggar International Airport is located at Gyazuling Town of Gonggar County of Shannan Prefecture. It is lies at the south river bank of Yarlung Zangbo River with an altitude of 3600m which is one of the highest airports in the world. It is the 4E level Airport with a runway of 4000m long and 45 m wide which can use for taking-off and landing of Boeing 747, airbus and other large aircrafts.

History

Tibet, located at the southwest border of China, is a vast territory with a sparse population. Due to the high altitude and highland climate, it used to be considered as the “restricted airspace”. In 1956, Damxung Airport was built and opened to aircrafts. Later, in 1965, civil aviation terminal in Lhasa completed construction and Beijing–Chengdu–Lhasa Lines officially opened.

Since 1965, Lhasa Gonggar Airport got an unprecedented development. At the beginning, it was just a civil aviation terminal with 16 staffs. Now it has more than 500 staffs. The air lines increased from 1 to 12 including one international line to Katmandu, and lines to Beijing, Chengdu, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Xian, Xining, Kunming, Diqing, Chamdo, Hong Kong and so on. There are more than 40 flights in each week, and annual passenger throughput reaches 700,000 person-times.

Airport Shuttle Buses:

Now the 2 bridges 1 tunnel project was completed. It just takes 35-40min to get from the airport to Lhasa. The price is 45 Yuan per person.

Taxi:

It takes about 150 Yuan for each taxi from Lhasa Gonggar Airport to the downtown.
