The Silk Road inside China is best understood as a connected network, beginning with imperial capitals and continuing through the Hexi Corridor to multiple oasis routes around the Taklamakan. Xian was known historically as Chang'an and serves as the eastern interpretive anchor of the route. Its value is not a claim that one road began at one gate; the city helps explain the imperial demand, diplomacy and cultural exchange that supported wider networks.
Main Xian experiences:
• Terracotta Warriors : The mausoleum army was created for Qin Shi Huang, centuries before the Silk Road flourished. It belongs in the route because it explains early imperial power, not because the figures date to the Tang dynasty.
• Huashan : Huashan provides a dramatic mountain excursion east of Xian. It suits active travelers with a spare day, but it should not displace the city's Silk Road museums and heritage when time is limited.
• Xian City Wall : The surviving Ming wall defines the historic center and offers urban context, although it is much later than Han and Tang Silk Road exchange. Keep historical layers clearly separated.

Dunhuang lies in Gansu at a strategic desert crossroads where routes divided around the Taklamakan. Its strongest appeal combines Buddhist art, oasis geography and the physical transition from the Hexi Corridor to the western regions.
Main Gansu and Dunhuang experiences:
• Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Spring : The dune-and-oasis setting explains Dunhuang's environment, but heat, wind and crowd conditions require flexible timing.
• Mogao Caves : Mogao preserves hundreds of decorated cave spaces created across roughly a millennium. Timed access, conservation rules and current ticket products must be verified through official channels.
• Jiayuguan : Jiayuguan Pass represents the Ming frontier and the western end of the best-known Ming wall. It is a valuable later chapter within a longer corridor history.

Xinjiang covers an immense area, and its oasis cities, mountains and deserts cannot be treated as one compact destination. A logical first route links a few hubs and gives each enough time for road transfers and cultural context.
Major Xinjiang bases:
• Turpan — a low, hot oasis for Gaochang, the Karez irrigation tradition and regional agriculture.
• Urumqi — the principal transport hub, useful for museum context and a separate Tianshan excursion.
