Jordan Romero: the youngest person to climb Mount Everest

Jordan Romero, born in California on 12 July 1996, reached the summit of Mount Everest from the Tibetan north side on 22 May 2010. At 13, he became the youngest person documented to summit the mountain. The achievement belongs in Everest history, but it is not evidence that an Everest attempt is appropriate for another child. Jordan Romero's 2010 Everest Expedition

Real view of the North Col on the Tibetan approach to Everest

Romero's team approached by the north route through Tibet. He climbed with his father Paul Romero, Karen Lundgren and experienced Sherpa team members. Contemporary reporting and his publisher record the 22 May summit; exact operational details should be taken from first-hand expedition material rather than later summaries.

The north-side choice avoided Nepal's Khumbu Icefall, but that did not make the attempt low risk. The North Col and Northeast Ridge involve long exposure at extreme altitude, severe wind, cold and limited rescue options. Route comparison belongs in the Mount Everest planning hub, not in a claim that one side is safe for minors.

Public discussion focused on a difficult question: whether a young teenager can give meaningful consent to risks that include permanent injury or death. Physical fitness, family support and a successful outcome do not settle the ethical, developmental or medical issues for future climbers.

Earlier Youngest Everest Climbers

Real portrait of Temba Tsheri, an earlier holder of the youngest Everest record

Before Romero, the overall youngest record had passed through several teenage climbers. Temba Tsheri Sherpa reached the summit in 2001 at age 16 after losing fingers to frostbite during an earlier attempt, an important reminder that a record can hide serious cost.

Ming Kipa Sherpa summited in 2003 at age 15 and held the overall youngest record before Romero. Separate sources may list youngest male, youngest female or youngest from a particular route; always read the category rather than comparing ages alone.

Age rules and expedition access can change, so an old record page is not a permit guide. Current eligibility must be confirmed with the responsible authorities and an authorized organizer. For comparison at the other end of the age range, see the oldest Everest climber guide.
