Everest-region travel begins at elevations where reduced oxygen affects every unacclimatized visitor, not only mountaineers. Even Lhasa is about 3,650 metres above sea level, and the north-side visitor area is much higher. Build a gradual approach into a wider Tibet itinerary rather than treating acclimatization as a spare afternoon.
Acclimatization is the body's response to lower oxygen pressure over time. Fitness can improve walking capacity but does not make a person immune to altitude illness. Previous trouble at a similar elevation and ascent rate is useful risk information, yet a good earlier trip is not a guarantee.

Acute mountain sickness (AMS) commonly begins after ascent with headache plus symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, fatigue, poor appetite or disturbed sleep. Dehydration, infection, migraine and exhaustion can look similar, so symptoms should be reported rather than self-diagnosed in silence.
Reduced oxygen pressure becomes more severe with elevation, especially during sleep. Pulse-oximeter numbers vary by altitude, device and individual; the reading should support, not replace, symptom assessment and professional advice.
The principal altitude syndromes are AMS, high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) and high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE). HAPE and HACE are emergencies and can occur with or without a long period of mild symptoms.
Mild symptoms can progress when ascent continues. Rest at the same altitude is not permission to climb higher if the person is deteriorating, and improvement after descent is valuable clinical information.
AMS warning signs: Headache after ascent together with nausea, dizziness, unusual fatigue, reduced appetite or poor sleep. A traveler with worsening symptoms should not continue to a higher sleeping altitude.
Emergency warning signs: Breathlessness at rest, persistent cough with marked weakness, confusion, abnormal behavior, severe drowsiness or loss of coordination require immediate action. Descent, oxygen and medical care should follow the emergency plan; waiting for morning can be dangerous.

The strongest practical protection is a gradual itinerary. Current travel-medicine guidance advises avoiding a very rapid jump to a high sleeping altitude and limiting sleeping-height gains once above about 3,000 metres, with additional acclimatization nights as elevation increases.
Use these principles to discuss the actual route with the operator and a qualified clinician. Exact pacing must reflect prior altitude response, health, terrain and access to descent—not a universal schedule.
1. Increase sleeping altitude gradually; a daytime excursion higher followed by a lower overnight is generally less stressful than sleeping at the day's highest point.
2. Add acclimatization time rather than using the first symptom-free morning as proof that adaptation is complete.
3. Keep initial exertion light and avoid alcohol during the first high-altitude days.
4. Know the fastest realistic descent route and who has authority to change the itinerary.
5. Drink normally to replace losses, but do not force excessive water; overhydration can also be harmful.
6. Continue regular food intake with familiar, digestible meals even if appetite is reduced.
7. Do not take acetazolamide, dexamethasone, oxygen or other medicines according to an internet packing list. Discuss indication, dose, contraindications and emergency use with a clinician.

People with heart, lung, blood, neurologic or other significant conditions should obtain individualized pre-travel medical advice; high altitude is not automatically prohibited, but risk differs substantially.
Carry a clear medical summary, insurance details and the operator's evacuation plan. Supplemental oxygen availability does not turn an unsuitable itinerary into a safe one.
If symptoms worsen, stop ascent and tell the guide immediately. Severe symptoms require descent and emergency care; never leave an unwell person alone.
