The two retained photographs show the former market and are kept as historical images, not as proof of current operation. They help explain the narrow-street setting and mixed merchandise that travelers remember. Do not caption them as a live 2026 market. Shanghai has since redeveloped this area. In September 2025, the city announced the trial opening of Xintiandi Dongtaili, a contemporary commercial and cultural complex along the historic street. It includes restored shikumen fabric and new retail, dining and cultural space; it is not a reopening of the old flea market. Xintiandi Dongtaili can be combined with a walk through Xintiandi, but check the current tenant directory and access before going. Visitors seeking craft souvenirs can also compare Yuyuan Market; book and calligraphy shoppers may prefer Fuzhou Road. Neither is a guarantee of genuine antiques.

Practical buying guidance
How to buy old-looking objects responsibly
Start by deciding whether you want a decorative reproduction, a contemporary craft, a vintage household object or a claimed cultural relic. Those categories require different evidence and prices.
Ask the seller to write the material, claimed date, condition, repairs, seller identity and price on the receipt. A story, patina, old label or “expert certificate” from the same seller is not independent authentication.
Inspect ceramics for cracks, restoration and unstable glaze; paper and textiles for mould, insect activity and new staining; wood for active pests and structural repair. Do not scratch, clean or test an item without permission.
Compare several sellers and negotiate only after establishing that the objects are comparable. Bargaining is not proof of fraud, and a fixed price is not proof of authenticity. Avoid pressure to misdescribe an item on a receipt.
China regulates the export of cultural relics. Travelers carrying an object that may fall within the rules must use lawful appraisal and export-permit channels; an ordinary shop receipt is not enough. When in doubt, choose a clearly documented modern reproduction. Last reviewed August 28, 2026; market status and tenant lists remain time-sensitive.
