One of landmark of Xi'an; the largest drum tower in China

The people who organized to construct Drum Tower were marquis Changxing–Hou Gengbing and magistrate of Xi'an Wang Zongzhou, and it is said to lay a foundation under the rainy day. Thirty-eighth year of the reign of emperor Kangxi (1699) in Qing dynasty, and Emperor Qianlong forth year (1740) it had rebuilt twice.

1. China Drum Culture Exhibition: Since ancient time, there are a variety of drums, like pottery drum, drum-shaped stone blocks, shield drum, war drum, elephant-foot drum, bronze drum, Dutan drum, etc.
The best time to explore the Xi'an Drum Tower is in the late afternoon and early evening. During this time, you can admire its grand and solemn structure under the sunlight and later experience the magical transformation as the lights illuminate the tower, creating a mesmerizing nightscape.
As dusk falls, the surrounding area becomes lively with local street vendors, music, and food stalls, making the atmosphere even more charming and authentic. The golden glow of the setting sun and the vibrant night scene provide two completely different but equally memorable experiences.
1. Drum Tower Square (Front Plaza):
This is the best location for capturing a full view of the Drum Tower. With the blue sky or sunset as the backdrop, you can highlight its majestic silhouette and ancient beauty. Sunset shots with golden light bathing the tower offer an especially atmospheric effect.
2. Side Streets around the Drum Tower:
Capture the Drum Tower from the side alleys or streets, blending its traditional architecture with daily life scenes—local pedestrians, shops, and historic surroundings. This creates storytelling photos that are rich in culture and realism.
3. High Vantage Points Nearby:
For a unique perspective, consider photographing the Drum Tower from rooftop cafes, nearby hotel balconies, or observation platforms. From above, you can frame the tower together with the bustling streets and skyline, showing the contrast between ancient and modern Xi'an.
1. Yangrou Paomo (羊肉泡馍): A rich lamb broth dish served with crumbled flatbread. The bread soaks up the flavorful soup, and the tender lamb makes it hearty and satisfying.
2. Liangpi (凉皮): Cold rice or wheat noodles with a chewy texture, often seasoned with sesame paste, chili oil, and vinegar—tangy, spicy, and refreshing.
3. Roujiamo (肉夹馍): Known as the “Chinese hamburger,” this snack consists of shredded, braised meat stuffed in a crispy flatbread—flavorful and incredibly satisfying.
4. Zenggao (甑糕): A sweet glutinous rice cake steamed with red dates or honey dates. It's visually appealing and offers a soft, sticky, and fragrant bite. These dishes can all be found in the Muslim Quarter, just steps from the Drum Tower, making your visit a treat for both the eyes and the palate.
