China entry rules depend on nationality, passport type, purpose, route and length of stay. This guide explains the decision process; it does not replace the National Immigration Administration, a Chinese embassy or the carrier operating your journey. Before acting on any summary, record four facts: the passport you will present, the purpose of the visit, the exact sequence of countries or regions, and every date of entry and exit. Those facts determine whether a nationality-based exemption, transit arrangement or visa is relevant. Residency in a third country does not automatically change passport-based eligibility. A travel companion may receive a different answer because of nationality or document type, so check each person separately, including children. Save screenshots of official notices with the access date, then recheck shortly before departure.
Do not rely on a country list copied months earlier. Visa-free arrangements and eligible ports can change, and an airline may check documents before boarding. First establish whether you will enter with a visa, under a nationality-based exemption, or through a qualifying transit arrangement. Then check passport validity, onward travel, accommodation details and any destination-specific permit.
If your route includes Hong Kong or Macao, treat each border crossing as a separate immigration event. Need a starting point? Most visitors use a valid Chinese visa or a currently published visa-free arrangement. Transit exemptions are route-specific, not a shortcut for an ordinary return trip. Confirm eligibility using official sources before buying a non-refundable ticket.
China publishes temporary and reciprocal visa-free arrangements for ordinary passport holders of specified countries. The permitted purposes, maximum stay and validity period are part of the rule. A published visa-free stay is a maximum, not a recommended itinerary length. Count days using the authority's method and keep evidence of the intended departure. Business meetings, tourism, family visits and exchanges can be treated differently from paid work, study, media activity or long-term residence. Border officers can ask about purpose, funds, accommodation and onward plans even when no visa is required. If the trip may change purpose after arrival, obtain advice from the responsible authority first; an exemption cannot be stretched by relabeling the activity.

Check the visa category, entries remaining, “enter before” date and permitted duration of each stay. A visa that looks valid may still be unusable if its entry count is exhausted. A visa sticker or residence document should be checked against the passport before every trip. Look for typographical errors, remaining entries and the final date on which entry is permitted; do not confuse that date with the length of stay granted after admission. If the passport is damaged, lost, renewed or close to expiry, contact the issuing mission and the airline instead of assuming a photocopy will work. Carry supporting documents in a secure folder, but minimize unnecessary copies of sensitive identity pages and destroy surplus printouts safely after travel.
Your passport and visa names, dates of birth and passport numbers must be consistent. If you renewed a passport, ask the issuing mission whether both documents can be carried or a new visa is required.
Apply through the official embassy, consulate or visa-service channel specified for your jurisdiction. Procedures and biometric requirements differ by location.
A tourist application commonly asks for a passport, form, photograph and itinerary or invitation evidence, but the mission may request more.
Do not purchase fabricated bookings or invitation letters. Inconsistencies can cause delay or refusal.

The replacement photograph shows a real visa-service office; it is illustrative, not a direction to use a private agent or a promise that every office follows the same process.

Former Chinese citizens and applicants born in China can face additional documentary requirements. Final authority rests with the issuing mission and immigration inspection.
A transit exemption applies only when the current rule covers your nationality, port, onward destination and intended movement. It is not the same as visa-free tourism. Transit cases often fail because the traveler checks only nationality and hours while overlooking route geometry. Separate tickets can add risk because the arriving carrier may not see the onward segment, baggage may need collection, and a delay could break the qualifying sequence. Confirm whether the transit clock begins at arrival or another official point, which cities or provinces are inside the permitted area, and whether the chosen port participates. A through ticket is not itself proof of eligibility, and admission remains subject to inspection at the border.
Do not memorize an old count of eligible countries or ports.
Check the current National Immigration Administration notice for the exact scheme available at your arrival port. A qualifying route normally requires travel from one country or region, through the permitted Chinese area, to a different country or region.

Example that commonly fails Country A → an eligible Chinese port → Country A is usually not third-country transit.

A missed or changed flight can affect compliance; contact the carrier and immigration authority promptly. When the route is complex or the answer is uncertain, obtain a visa before travel rather than building the whole trip around an assumption. Some cruise passengers may use a published group-based exemption when arriving through eligible ports and received by an approved Chinese travel agency.
The ship, group handling, stay length and geographic scope matter. Independent travelers should not infer eligibility from a cruise itinerary alone.

A special group arrangement may apply to eligible ASEAN ordinary-passport holders arriving through the specified Guilin port with an approved tour. Confirm nationality, group handling, port and permitted stay under the current notice.
Hainan has its own published visa-free framework for eligible ordinary-passport holders. It should not be confused with entry permission for an unrestricted trip across mainland China.

Older guides describe group visits from Hong Kong or Macao to parts of Guangdong. Because the operator, ports, nationality and route conditions are specific, use only a current official notice and an authorized operator's written confirmation.
A valid card may support eligible short business travel when China is listed among its approved economies, but it does not authorize employment or tourism outside its conditions. Confirm passport linkage, expiry and current entry treatment.
Hong Kong and Macao operate separate immigration systems. Re-entering mainland China requires a valid remaining entry or an applicable exemption. Recheck border hours, carrier rules and weather disruptions; do not rely on removed pandemic-era forms.

Prepare your flight or train number, first address, contact details and passport information.
Read every declaration before submission; a third party may help with language but the traveler remains responsible.

Days 1–3 Once inside China, real-name systems continue to matter. Train, domestic-flight and many attraction bookings must use the same identity document and spelling. Hotels register foreign guests; a private stay follows the locally applicable public-security procedure. Keep the original passport securely accessible rather than leaving it with an unverified intermediary. A photograph helps with recovery but usually cannot replace the original for travel. Also confirm international payment setup, a backup payment method, an offline Chinese address for each hotel and an emergency contact before the first domestic transfer. Beijing for the Forbidden City, one Great Wall day and a flexible neighborhood or temple visit. Days 4–5 Xi'an for the Terracotta Warriors and city-wall or Muslim Quarter context. Days 6–8 Guilin and Yangshuo for karst scenery, with the exact river plan checked against weather. Days 9–11 Shanghai for the Bund, museum time and a food or architecture walk. Booking order Confirm entry eligibility first, then international transport, domestic rail or flights, key attraction reservations and hotels.
Identity consistency Use the same passport spelling and number across every reservation. Health and safety
Carry necessary medication and insurance details; review the China travel safety checklist. Final check Reconfirm rules, tickets, weather and closures 72 hours before departure. A tour can assist logistics, but no operator can guarantee immigration admission.
