Day 1Kunming Arrival

Arrive in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province, and meet your guide at the airport. Transfer to the reserved hotel and keep the remainder of the day free.

Day 2Kunming-Stone Forest-Dali

Guandu Ancient Town, Stone Forest, Take bullet train to Dali

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Accommodation: In Dali

Drive toward the Stone Forest , stopping en route at Guandu Ancient Town to see architecture reflecting several historic periods. Continue to the karst formations of the Stone Forest for the scheduled sightseeing.

In the late afternoon, take the bullet train from Kunming to Dali and transfer to the hotel for the night.

Three Pagodas in Chongshen Temple, Erhai Lake Ecological Corridor bicycle ride, Zhoucheng Village Bai Village with Tie-dyeing Experience, Dali Ancient Town

Begin at the Three Pagodas in Chongshen Temple, where the pagodas, Cangshan and Erhai Lake form Dali's best-known historic setting. Continue with the scheduled bike riding along Erhai Lake for views along the lakeshore.

After lunch, visit Zhoucheng to see Bai architecture and take part in the tie-dyeing activity. Return to Dali Ancient Town and keep the rest of the time free among its traditional Bai houses.

Return to the hotel after sightseeing. The listed independent evening suggestion is the old town's bar area, including Bad Monkey Bar for house music.

Day 4Dali – Lijiang by private car (183 km)

Drive to Lijiang, visit Shaxi Ancient Town

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Accommodation: In Lijiang

Check out and drive about 3.5 hours toward Shaxi , stopping at the old Wind-Rain Bridge and the wood-carving workshop. Explore Shaxi Ancient Town and walk along Dengsi Street to see the Ancient Theater Stage.

Continue by road to Lijiang and check in for the night.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Ganhaizi Meadow and Impression Lijiang Ethnic Show, Baishui River and Terraces, Baisha Old Town and Murals

Drive to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and take the cable car to Glacier Park at 4,506 meters. Walk around the park or continue on foot toward the listed 4,680-meter point, depending on your preference and condition.

After lunch, watch the Impression Lijiang Ethnic Show at Ganhaizi Meadow, a performance presenting traditions of the region's Naxi, Yi and Bai communities.

Continue to Baisha Old Town and see the approximately 600-year-old Baisha Murals, included within Lijiang's UNESCO-listed cultural heritage.

Climb Lion Hill to Wangu Tower for a panoramic view across Dayan Ancient Town, then keep the remaining time free in the old town.

Day 6Lijiang-Tiger Leaping Gorge-Shangri-La

The First Bend of the Yangtze River, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Dukezong Old Town

Check out and drive about 60 km to Shigu Town for the First Bend of the Yangtze River . The listed optional stops in town include the Iron Chain Bridge and Red Army Long March Memorial Monument. Continue to Tiger Leaping Gorge before traveling onward.

Travel toward Shangri-La through valleys of barley fields and grazing yaks. After arrival, explore Dukezong Ancient Town, a historic stop on the Tea-Horse trade route toward Tibet and India.

Songzanlin Monastery, Pudacuo National Park (incl. Bita Lake & Shudu Lake), Tibetan Village

Visit Songzanlin monastery, Yunnan's largest Tibetan monastery. Continue to Bita and Shudu lakes in Pudacuo National Park, then visit A Tibetan Village and meet a local family.

Day 8Shangri-La – Deqin – Feilai Monastery

Bengzilan Town, the Moon Bend of Jinsha River, Dongzhulin monastery and Baima Snow Mountain Pass

Check out and drive approximately 187 km and 4-5 hours to Deqin County, at about 3,400 meters, via the Baima Snow Mountain Nature Reserve. Clear weather may provide views of Baima Snow Mountain.

Stop for lunch in Benzilan town and see the Moon Bend of Jinsha(Yangtze) River, Dongzhulin Monastery and Baima Snow Mountain along the route. The drive passes forest, streams, prayer flags, stupas and Tibetan villages.

Reach Feilai Temple in the late afternoon and, weather permitting, see sunset over Meili Snow Mountain before the overnight stay.

Day 9Feilai Monastery – Shangri-la

Sunrise of Meili Snow Mountain, Lancang-Mekong Grand Canyon, Mingyong Glacier Park

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Rise early for sunrise views of Meili Snow Mountain, then drive about 1.5 hours to Mingyong Village. Walk roughly four kilometers to the Mingyong Glaciers and continue to Taizi Monastery for another glacier viewpoint. Hiring a horse for the ascent is optional and at your own expense.

After the glacier visit, trek beside the Lancang River Grand Canyon with views toward Meili and Baima snow mountains before returning toward Feilai Temple.

Notes: The trekking distance depends on your individual energy and condition.

Day 10Shangri-La Departure

Transfer to the airport

Meals: Breakfast

Keep the day free until the airport transfer. If connecting with an international flight, continue by air to Kunming or another Chinese gateway city.

We were looking for a tour in SW China while in the area for work and found this one. While we wouldn't normally get a private tour but surprisingly it was actually cheaper than most of the group tours in the area and was great value. While I would usually rather keep one guide for the whole tour, as you get to know each other and they get to know what you are interested in, we changed guides 5 times during this trip (fortunately we had the same guide in Kunming at the start and end of the tour which was a real bonus as Murphy, our Kunming based guide, was excellent.) In this case changing guides had the advantage of local knowledge at each site so compensated for the change. Of the 4 guides we had 3 excellent and 1 very good with each of them working hard to look after us and make sure we enjoyed our trip. Vicky, our Dali based guide was also extremely good making our time there a highlight. The tour gives you 2 days at each base ie travel in the morning, have the afternoon and the next day touring the area then drive to the next base. We chose the driving tour as we feel it gives you a better experience of the area and you get to see the locals in action. All the drivers we had were great – they went out of their way to look after us and were very safe, which is saying something for driving in China. While all of the guides were very fluent in English none of the drivers could speak English which was a slight disadvantage as you didn't have the guides with you when traveling between bases but the friendliness and helpfulness of the drivers more than made up for this.
The tour was very well organised and we knew what we were doing from the time we met our guide on arrival at the Kunming railway station to when we walked through security at the airport on our way out. The tour comes with 4,5 and 6 star accommodation choices and we went for the cheapest 4 star option. While the English at the hotels was limited the guides made sure we were checked in and out and took care of any issues (which were minimal). The 4 star option is largely “Chinese style” hotels ie designed for Chinese visitors with breakfast consisting of what many westeners would consider dinner style food but there was always eggs and toast for the less adventurous. The hotels were all clean and comfortable and generally very well located. The Hotel in Kunming (Jin Jang Inn) was a bonus as it seemed higher than 4 star and we stayed there both on our way in and out. As well as breakfast, lunch came with the tour which was enjoyable as the guides choose the restaurants so we got a variety. I got the feeling that most of the restaurants were owned by friends or family or there was some arrangement with the guide, but as you get to formally review each guide and the meals at the end of each stop they work hard to make sure you enjoy the meal and there was always an abundance of food. We tried a range of local cuisine and there was only one meal we didn't think was up to par. You get your own dinner which also suited us as there is invariably a range of restaurants or for the more adventurous there is the street vendors and you can choose what you want. The vehicles we were driven in were all very good- plenty of space and very comfortable.
Being a private tour, while there was a set itinerary, which was diverse and very interesting with something for most people, the guides could tweak it to suit individual interests eg more time at one site and less at another. It is easy to get a bit templed out but overall the itinerary was a good mic of nature and culture. I would thoroughly recommend the tour and the company and we will be looking to the company if/when we go back – Guilin is next on the list as the guides were very happy to discus what they thought we would and wouldn't enjoy based on working with us on this tour,
