6-Day Guangdong Heritage Tour: Guangzhou, Kaiping & Foshan

Arrive in Guangzhou, meet your local representative at the airport and transfer to the hotel. The rest of the day is free to settle in. As a historic port and major South China commercial center, Guangzhou introduces the region's longstanding trading and Lingnan heritage.

After breakfast, take a relaxed walk through Yuexiu Park, Guangzhou's largest city park. See the Five Rams Statue and learn the legend behind the city's “City of Rams” nickname.

Continue to the red, five-story Zhenhai Tower for an introduction to more than 2,000 years of Guangzhou history and a view across the city. Then visit Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Memorial Hall on the former site of his presidential office, south of Yuexiu Hill.

Yuexiu Park

Visit the Temple of Chen Family, also known as Chen Clan Academy. Built between 1890 and 1894, its detailed decoration is a notable example of Lingnan architecture.

In the afternoon, explore the Guangdong Provincial Museum, whose 166,000-item collection includes calligraphy, paintings, ceramics, woodcarvings and gemstones. Continue to Huacheng Square for views toward Guangzhou Tower. A traditional Cantonese lunch is arranged at a local restaurant.

Return to the hotel at the end of the sightseeing program.

Evening Optional activity: Join the 70-minute Pearl River night cruise for views of illuminated historic buildings and modern towers along Guangzhou's waterfront, including Canton Tower.

After breakfast, drive about 1.5 hours to Jiangmen and visit Chen Pi Village. Its cultural experience hall introduces Xinhui dried orange peel through displays on its origins, production, fragrance and connections with Wuyi culture.

A local dried-orange-peel banquet is arranged for lunch. Continue to 33 Street, a filming location for the television drama “The Knockout.” Walk through the historic district around Xuding Street, whose shops and commercial buildings reflect more than 600 years of Jiangmen's overseas-Chinese business history.

Travel about 2 hours to Kaiping and begin at Chikan Ancient Town, a 350-year-old town once known as an important western Guangdong commercial port and home of overseas Chinese communities. Walk among its 20th-century arcades, cobbled streets, weathered windows and carved gray-brick decoration.

Continue to the Kaiping Diaolou and Villages , multi-story defensive homes that combine Chinese and Western structural and decorative traditions. Kaiping has four principal Diaolou groups; Zili Village contains nine Diaolou and six Western-style villas dating from 1919 to 1948, including the six-story Mingshilou.

Visit Maxianglong Village between Baizu Mountain and the Tanjiang River. Built by the Huang and Guan families from the late Qing period into the early Republic era, the village contains more than 100 traditional homes, Diaolou and villa-style residences among bamboo and mature trees.

In the late afternoon, drive about 2 hours to Shunde in Foshan for the overnight stay.

Kaiping Diaolou

Begin with authentic Cantonese morning tea and a dim sum breakfast at a long-established Shunde restaurant.

Visit Qinghui Garden, one of Guangdong's four renowned gardens and a representative Lingnan garden. Around midday, walk along Daliang Huagai Road to look for specialties such as double-skin milk, local snacks and rice-porridge hot pot.

In the afternoon, explore the Foshan Ancestral Temple, a Lingnan cultural complex founded during the Northern Song period from 1078 to 1085. Its martial-arts displays include Ip Wen Tong and the Wong Fei-hung Memorial Museum. Watch the scheduled lion dance and martial-arts performance, then learn basic lion-dance movements from a local instructor.

Return by road to central Guangzhou after the Foshan visit.
