A clear decision guide for Singapore ordinary-passport holders: who can use the 30-day mutual visa exemption, who still needs a visa, and what to prepare for arrival.

Singapore citizens can make many short trips to China without applying for a visa, but “visa-free” is not a blanket permission for every purpose. The 30-day mutual exemption is tied to the passport type, reason for travel and length of stay. A visitor attending meetings for a week and a person taking a six-month university course may leave from the same airport, yet they follow different entry routes.
This page gives ordinary Singapore passport holders a decision process before booking. It is not immigration advice. Confirm the rule with the Chinese Embassy in Singapore or China's National Immigration Administration before departure, particularly if the trip involves work, study, media activity, long stays or a passport other than an ordinary Singapore passport.
Ordinary Singapore passport holders may enter mainland China without a visa for up to 30 days under the mutual visa-exemption arrangement effective since 9 February 2024. The exemption is intended for short visits; the permitted activity still has to match the policy.
Tourism, short business visits, family or friend visits and transit are typical qualifying purposes. Employment, formal study, permanent residence and other activities requiring prior approval are not converted into visa-free activities simply because the stay is under 30 days. Apply for the appropriate visa before travel when the purpose falls outside the exemption.
The duration is calculated from 00:00 on the day following entry. Do not treat the maximum as a target. Build a margin before the last permitted day in case a domestic flight is cancelled, weather affects a rail connection or illness delays departure.
| Your plan | Entry route | Key check |
|---|---|---|
| Tourism or short business visit, 30 days or less | Visa-free entry may apply | Ordinary Singapore passport and eligible activity |
| Employment, long-term study or residence | Visa required | Obtain the correct category before departure |
| Visit longer than 30 days | Visa required | Plan the whole stay under the correct permission |
| Connection to a third country or region | Mutual exemption usually makes transit policy unnecessary | Use the rule that clearly matches the actual itinerary |
A visa waiver removes the advance visa application; it does not remove border inspection. Carry the same ordinary Singapore passport used for every booking, a confirmed return or onward ticket, accommodation details and a short route plan. If staying in a private home, keep the host's address and phone number. Business visitors should carry an invitation or meeting information that explains the short, permitted nature of the trip.
Check passport validity well beyond the planned return date, even where the waiver notice does not state a universal six-month rule. Airlines can apply document checks at boarding, and a nearly expired passport creates unnecessary risk on any international journey. Children need their own valid travel documents; bring evidence of parental authority or consent where family circumstances could prompt questions.

Foreign travellers can complete China's arrival information through official National Immigration Administration channels before travel or use facilities at the port of entry. Avoid unofficial websites that charge a fee or collect passport details while pretending to be an arrival-card service.
Hotels normally complete temporary accommodation registration for foreign guests. A traveller staying in a private residence should confirm the local registration procedure with the host and public security authority promptly after arrival. Keep the hotel's Chinese name and address as a screenshot; English names alone can be ambiguous for drivers.
Apply in advance if the trip involves paid employment, a work placement, degree study, long-term language study, residence, journalism or another regulated activity. A conference participant may fit a short business visit, while a person working at the event may not. The label used by an employer or organiser is less important than what the traveller will actually do.
A visa may also be the sensible route when the schedule approaches 30 days. It is poor planning to build a long project around repeated exits without confirming whether each entry is lawful for the actual purpose. Direct services commonly connect Singapore with major Chinese gateways, but schedules change by season. Guangzhou and Shenzhen work well for a Greater Bay Area trip; Shanghai is efficient for the lower Yangtze region; Beijing suits a first journey centred on imperial history; Chengdu is the natural gateway for Sichuan food and giant pandas; Kunming opens Yunnan with a shorter northbound flight than many northern cities.
A first visit of eight to ten days is better with two bases than four. Shanghai plus Hangzhou provides a modern-city and classical-landscape contrast with a short rail connection. Beijing plus Xi'an combines two history-rich cities without a domestic flight. Kunming plus Dali offers a slower Yunnan route, but altitude, road transfers and weather still need to be considered.

Visitors can register Alipay or Weixin Pay with an overseas phone number and link supported international cards. Some Singapore-issued wallets and banking apps also work through participating cross-border QR networks, but coverage, limits and merchant acceptance change. Check the provider's current terms rather than assuming every QR code will accept the same wallet.
Carry a physical international card and some renminbi cash as fallbacks. Cash can be exchanged at authorised counters or withdrawn from compatible ATMs. A hotel may take an international card while a family-run restaurant prefers a domestic QR payment, so redundancy is more useful than searching for one “best” method.
China Railway uses real-name ticketing. Foreign passport holders can register on the English 12306 website or app, complete identity verification and buy electronic tickets. Enter the name and passport number exactly as shown in the document. Bring that original passport to the station; when automated gates cannot read it, use the staffed channel.
Allow 45 to 60 minutes at an unfamiliar major station. Security screening, separate entrance halls and long walks to platforms make a five-minute metro-style arrival unrealistic. Keep large suitcases manageable because space near the seat can be limited even when the train itself is comfortable.
A Singapore roaming plan or travel eSIM is convenient for short trips, while a local SIM may suit longer stays or travellers who need a mainland number. Download apps, translation data, route confirmations and hotel addresses before departure. Keep important information offline in case roaming activation or account verification fails.
China uses the same UTC+8 time zone as Singapore, which removes jet lag but not travel fatigue. A late-night arrival followed by an early attraction booking is still a poor start. Book the first morning lightly, especially when travelling with children or older relatives.
