Reviewed August 27, 2026. This guide explains the current China tourist-visa workflow for applicants living in the United States. It is editorial travel information, not legal advice or a guarantee of approval. Visa rules, jurisdiction, fees and document requests can change; the Chinese Embassy or responsible Consulate-General and the China Online Visa Application system are the controlling sources.
A U.S. passport holder taking an ordinary round-trip tourist journey generally needs the appropriate visa before arrival. Limited visa-free arrangements have separate nationality, route, port, destination and stay conditions. The National Immigration Administration's 240-hour visa-free transit policy can apply to eligible U.S. travelers continuing to a third country or region through designated ports and within permitted areas; it is not permission for a simple U.S.–China–U.S. round trip.

For ordinary tourism, the relevant category is usually the L visa . Confirm that category, your place of residence and the responsible Embassy or Consulate-General before creating the application. Do not select an office because it appears faster; current consular jurisdiction and local submission instructions control where the case belongs.
The Embassy's September 2025 instructions direct applicants to the new China Online Visa Application system for form completion, document upload and preliminary review. Requirements are case-specific, so use the system guidance and the responsible office's current notice rather than an old third-party checklist. Prepare clear, internally consistent records:
Create the application through the official system, choose the correct jurisdiction, complete every section truthfully and upload legible files. Save the application number and check status. Under the current process, submit the passport, barcode information page and requested originals only after the application shows “Passport to be submitted.” Follow that office's hours and delivery rules.
At submission, follow the responsible office's instructions for original documents, fingerprints if applicable, agent use and return delivery. At collection, use an accepted payment method and inspect the visa immediately: name, passport number, entries, validity and duration of each stay must match the issued decision. Approval, validity and length of stay remain consular decisions.
The Chinese Embassy's fee notice in effect through December 31, 2026 lists USD 140 for regular service for a U.S. citizen, with a USD 25 surcharge for approved express service. Treat these as the official figures at this review date, not permanent prices. The responsible office may have separate return-mail or service arrangements, and expedited handling is not automatic. Recheck the newest fee notice before submission.
The Embassy's current Washington instructions list these on-site collection methods:
Payment check:
The Embassy's September 2025 instructions describe an average four-business-day regular service and three-business-day express service after passport submission. These are reference times, not a promise, and they do not include the applicant's preparation, online preliminary review, mailing or a request for additional documents.
Apply with a practical buffer and avoid buying nonrefundable travel solely on an estimated visa date. Track the online status and collection notice. The U.S.-to-China preparation guide helps align document names, bookings, payments and offline records after approval.
Use current consular jurisdiction, not the obsolete state list copied by older travel pages. The closure of the former Houston office and later jurisdiction adjustments make historical lists especially unreliable. Confirm residence evidence and office responsibility on the official Embassy/Consulate page immediately before applying.
Once entry permission is understood, match flights, trains and hotels to the exact passport name and dates. Keep the passport accessible, store secure copies separately and distinguish visa validity from the permitted duration of each stay. A visa permits travel to the border; entry is decided by immigration authorities. build a route that matches the issued permission before making final purchases.

For a structured group trip:
For a private or independent trip:
Before departure, review the China visa guide and then revisit the official Embassy and National Immigration Administration notices. If an agent assists, keep control of the account, read every answer before submission and verify the final application yourself. A travel planner can coordinate an itinerary but cannot decide visa approval or waive immigration conditions. That distinction protects both the traveler and the integrity of the application.
