Swiss ordinary-passport holders can currently enter China without a visa for tourism, business, family or friend visits, exchange and transit for stays of up to 30 days through 31 December 2026 .
That is the rule in force at our policy check on 29 August 2026, based on notices from the Chinese Embassy in Switzerland and China's National Immigration Administration. It replaces the older 15-day wording that still circulates online. The waiver is useful, but it is not an automatic right of admission: the border officer still checks your passport, purpose and intended stay. This guide explains the decision points before you book. For the wider country list and calculation rules, see Yun Sky Travel's current China visa-free policy guide.
Usually not for a qualifying trip of no more than 30 days. You must hold an ordinary Swiss passport and travel for tourism, business, visiting relatives or friends, exchange, or transit. A visa is still required when the intended stay is longer, the purpose is employment, study, journalism or another activity outside the waiver, or the traveler uses a service or other non-ordinary passport. Count conservatively and leave room for delays: the National Immigration Administration states that the stay is calculated from 00:00 on the day after entry. Anyone combining mainland China with Hong Kong or Macao should check separate immigration conditions and confirm that the chosen routing fits the planned mainland entries.
There is no special waiver application, but a clear, documented trip is easier to explain at airline check-in and border control. Keep the essentials together in print or available offline; mobile data may not work immediately after landing.
Valid ordinary Swiss passport The official FAQ requires a passport valid for at least the intended stay. Airlines and later destinations can apply their own validity rules, so check every carrier and onward country rather than relying on a general six-month slogan.
Evidence of purpose, accommodation and onward travel Carry your return or onward booking, first-night address, hotel confirmations, host details if staying privately, and a short day-by-day outline. Travel insurance and emergency contacts are sensible even though they are not listed as universal waiver conditions. Keep names and dates consistent across bookings.
A balanced first journey: Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai in 10–12 days
This sequence gives three distinct chapters without turning the holiday into a chain of airport transfers: imperial sites and the Great Wall around Beijing, archaeological history in Xi'an, then contemporary urban life in Shanghai. Allow a free half-day after arrival and avoid placing a non-refundable excursion immediately after a long-haul flight.

Choose fewer bases and protect time for weather or transport changes
A nature-led alternative: Beijing with Zhangjiajie or Guilin in 12–15 days
Pair one major gateway with one landscape region, not every famous name on the map. Domestic travel can consume most of a day after hotel checkout, airport or station access and the final transfer. Yun Sky Travel schedules the final mainland departure well before the 30-day ceiling and records the entry date used for the count.
Apply in advance if your passport, purpose or duration falls outside the waiver. Typical examples include a stay over 30 days, employment, long-term study, residence-related activity or a non-ordinary passport. Do not enter as a tourist expecting to convert the trip informally. Visa categories and evidence vary, so use the China visa overview to identify the correct route, then confirm it with the Chinese mission or application centre before paying for fixed arrangements.
Ordinary-passport applications are handled through the Chinese Visa Application Service Centres serving Switzerland. Addresses and counter arrangements can change; Zurich moved in 2025. Use the centre's official contact page on the day you prepare the application rather than copying an old address from a travel blog.

1. Match the visa category to the real purpose
Tourism normally uses an L visa, while work, study and family residence use different categories and supporting evidence. If the purpose is mixed, ask the centre which category governs rather than selecting the easiest-looking form.
2. Complete the online application
Register on the official Visa for China website, select the Swiss centre that will receive the documents, complete every applicable field and upload the requested evidence.
3. Wait for the online review result
The current Swiss process reviews the online submission before counter delivery. Read the approval message closely; it tells you what to print, sign and bring.

4. Prepare the original document set
Bring the original passport, signed final page of the application, application certificate, recent compliant photograph, declarations and the supporting documents requested for your category. Requirements can change and the consular authority may ask for more.
5. Submit and pay through the selected centre
Current centre guidance allows weekday document submission during stated counter hours without a separate appointment after online approval. Payment methods, service charges, postal options and express availability are centre-specific.
6. Track and collect the passport
Keep the pickup receipt and collect the passport at the stated time or use a confirmed postal service where available.
Verify every visa detail as soon as the passport is returned. The China visa application checklist helps you review names, passport number, entries and validity before departure.

Start checking the official process four to six weeks before departure, especially around Swiss and Chinese holidays, but follow the centre's current advice on the earliest filing date. Do not buy inflexible tickets solely because a typical processing time is advertised. Online review, requests for extra evidence, postal delivery and public holidays can extend the real timeline.
Entry eligibility is only one part of a workable trip. Yun Sky Travel can turn your arrival city, pace, interests and budget into an itinerary with realistic train or flight connections, clearly named hotels and a final departure comfortably inside the permitted stay. We flag assumptions instead of promising admission, and we ask travelers to reconfirm official rules shortly before travel. For a tailored plan, send your passport nationality, intended dates, entry city, exit city and any mobility or dietary needs to info@yunskytravel.com.
