Visitors can pay in China with a mix of mobile payments, bank cards and renminbi cash. Acceptance differs by merchant, location, card issuer and payment provider, so a resilient plan uses more than one method. Add these steps to the China pre-departure checklist.
Bank cards International card acceptance is strongest at many larger hotels, department stores and transport or visitor facilities, but it is not universal. Look for the card-network logo and ask before a purchase.
Alipay Eligible overseas users may be able to register and link supported international cards. Identity checks, issuer approval, limits and fees can vary, so set up and test the account before relying on it.
Weixin Pay Eligible overseas users may also be able to link supported cards to Weixin Pay. App availability and verification requirements change, making the current in-app guidance more reliable than an old step-by-step screenshot.
Carry at least one widely accepted card and tell the issuing bank about travel if required. Keep a second card separately, know the card PIN, and choose to be charged in renminbi when a terminal offers an avoidable home-currency conversion. Small businesses may not accept foreign cards even when large nearby merchants do.

Mobile payment is embedded in daily life, from restaurants to taxis. Setup requires a working phone, stable data and an eligible account, which is why the China internet guide should be completed first. Keep the phone charged and protect the payment PIN.
Set up Alipay
Download the official app from a trusted app store, register with the traveler's own phone number, complete any requested identity verification and add a supported card. Names and document details should match the passport and card account.

Step 1
Open the official app and select the international registration flow available to the account. Interface labels may change after updates.
Step 2
Complete identity and security checks only inside the official app. Never send a verification code to a person claiming to provide payment support.
Step 3
Add an eligible card and review issuer messages, provider limits and any displayed fee before confirming. A linked card can still be declined by the bank.
Test before a busy travel day
Make a small legitimate purchase when an alternative payment method is available. This exposes verification or issuer problems before a railway transfer or late arrival.
How to pay with Alipay
Two QR workflows are common, but the merchant decides which one is used. Read the amount and merchant name on screen before approving.

Scan the merchant code
Use the app's scan function, enter the amount only when instructed, verify the currency and merchant, then authorize the payment. Do not scan codes sent by unknown contacts.
Show your payment code
Open the in-app payment code for the cashier to scan. Shield the screen from unnecessary viewing and close the code after the transaction.
Set up Weixin Pay
Install the official Weixin or WeChat app, register with the traveler's own number and follow the current Services or Wallet flow. Availability can depend on account region and verification status.
Add a card safely
Use the wallet's card-management screen and check that the card network is currently supported. The following labels describe the usual logic, not a permanent interface.
Open Me or Profile
Locate the personal account area in the current app version.
Open Services
Choose the services or payment area shown for the account.
Open Wallet
Review identity status, security settings and available card options.
Choose Cards
Select the function for adding a bank card rather than following a link from a message.
Complete verification
Enter accurate card and identity information, then respond to any bank verification request.
How to pay with Weixin Pay
As with Alipay, either the traveler scans a merchant code or the cashier scans an in-app payment code.
Scan a merchant code
Renminbi cash remains a valid backup and is particularly useful when a phone, app or card fails. Obtain cash from a bank, licensed exchange service or compatible ATM, protect the PIN and decline suspicious assistance. Carry smaller notes for modest purchases and check change. Before departure, combine payment preparation with the practical China travel checklist.
