January is a winter trip in the northwest and a very different proposition in southern Yunnan. A sunny afternoon in Kunming or Dali does not predict the temperature after dark, and a high mountain outing needs its own conditions check. Choose January for the kind of winter experience you want: town-and-lake days, a terrace-focused southern branch or a warmer Xishuangbanna stay.
In the Dali-Lijiang corridor, build your day around daylight and allow for cold mornings, shaded lanes and wind near open water. Shangri-La involves a higher overnight setting and should not inherit the same packing plan. In Xishuangbanna, a warmer daytime rhythm can suit outdoor visits that would be a different experience in midsummer. These regional contrasts matter more than a province-wide average.
January is a period to investigate for water-filled terrace scenes, but field water, crop work, fog and the direction of light all affect the view.
