Kunming to Dali is a key journey on the classic Yunnan route. Rail is a useful option to compare with a road transfer, especially when the purpose is simply to move between overnight bases. The important detail is where the journey begins and ends: Kunming airport, Kunming's different stations, Dali railway station, Old Town and Erhai hotels are not interchangeable locations.

Check whether the selected train departs from Kunming Railway Station, 昆明站, or Kunming South, 昆明南站. They are different stations with different approaches from the city and airport. Send the complete name and train number to the driver, rather than asking for “the station for Dali.”
If you are landing in Kunming, leave time for arrival procedures and the separate journey to the correct railway station. A flight landing time is not the moment you are ready to board a train. Choose the final address before booking the arrival transfer. Dali railway station serves the modern city area, while Old Town and lakeside properties require additional travel. A hotel advertised as Erhai view may be far from the town area you intend to explore.

Make check-in and a nearby meal the first commitments. A short Old Town orientation can fit after the bags are settled, but a full lake circuit or timed workshop should not depend on an optimistic transfer estimate. Save the first full day for the main Erhai or village experience.
For a short trip, protect the number of settled Dali nights. One late arrival and an early train onward provide little usable time even though the itinerary lists two calendar days in Dali. The five-day plan shows a two-base route with more room at the lake.
A private car can make luggage handling simpler or support a chosen stop, but it is not automatically the best option for every party. Ask for the vehicle capacity with bags, daily scope and exact drop-off. If sightseeing is included, distinguish a driver from a guide and identify the visit and entry costs. Unspecified shopping stops should not stand in for a meaningful break.
Check the actual dated service. Then add the journey to the departure station, required checks and the transfer from Dali station to the hotel; the rail duration alone is not the travel day.
It is possible, but the location changes the daily travel. Choose the hotel for the intended stay, not solely for the arrival convenience.
Vehicle access may stop before the property. Confirm the meeting point, remaining walk and bag handling with the hotel.
