China Visa-Free Travel from Thailand: 2026 Entry Guide

The Thailand–China mutual visa-exemption agreement has applied since March 1, 2024. Thai ordinary-passport holders may stay up to 30 days per eligible visit and no more than 90 days in any 180-day period. Work, study, media activity, residence and longer stays require the appropriate visa in advance. Reviewed August 29, 2026.

Documents to Carry for Visa-Free Entry

  • Use the valid Thai ordinary passport and keep its full identity consistent across air, hotel and rail records.
  • Carry onward or return transport, first accommodation and evidence matching the declared purpose. Border inspection makes the admission decision; reservations are supporting evidence, not a guarantee.

When a Chinese Visa Is Required

Apply before travel when the planned stay exceeds 30 days, cumulative use would exceed 90 days in 180, or the activity involves employment, study, journalism, settlement or another prior approval. Do not mislabel a work visit as tourism.

Where to Apply in Thailand

Ordinary-passport applicants should use the current online system and submission channel designated by the Chinese Embassy or responsible consulate.

Bangkok Confirm the live center portal, jurisdiction, address, hours and holiday calendar before travel.

Chiang Mai Check whether the current center accepts the applicant's residence area and category.

Khon Kaen Follow the responsible consulate's current notice rather than an old address list.

Songkhla and Phuket Verify which consular office or center handles ordinary passports and whether online review is required first.

Applicants outside Thailand Application jurisdiction generally follows lawful residence. A visitor in Thailand may need to apply in the country where they legally reside.

How to Apply for the Correct Chinese Visa

1. Complete the current online application

  • Use the portal linked by the responsible Chinese mission and enter every passport identity field exactly.
  • 2. Prepare basic evidence
  • Bring the original passport, relevant copies, compliant photograph and previous Chinese passport or visa evidence when applicable.
  • 3. Add category-specific documents
  • Tourism, business, family, study and employment have different evidence. Non-Thai applicants also need proof of lawful stay in Thailand.

4. Submit and inspect

Follow the online notice for appointment, fingerprints, fees and collection. On return, check name, passport number, entries, validity and duration; report any discrepancy before travel.

When to Apply

Research before purchasing restricted tickets, then file within the mission's live window. Allow for online review, holidays and supplemental checks. Several working days is an estimate after acceptance, not a guaranteed end-to-end timeline.

Processing Time and Follow-Up

Regular service follows the current center estimate after formal acceptance.

A case may take longer for supplementary documents, interview or administrative review; track it only through the official receipt and portal.

How to Read the Visa

Entries

Each mainland entry uses an available entry unless a separate visa-free basis is valid.

Enter Before

This is the last entry date, not the departure deadline.

Duration of Stay

Count the permitted stay as the visa and border record specify. Do not combine unused days from another entry; a visa permits travel to seek entry but does not guarantee admission.

Plan a Logical Thailand-to-China Route

A lower-transfer southwest route can begin with Kunming, continue by rail to Dali and then Lijiang. Allow altitude progression, separate station transfer time from train time, avoid public-holiday peaks and keep a buffer before the international departure.
