How to Visit China Without a Visa: 2026 Decision Guide

There is no single visa-free rule for every Southeast Asian traveler. The lawful route depends on passport nationality and type, purpose, length, entry port and onward itinerary. This decision guide separates bilateral or unilateral entry, regional programs and transit. Review the current China visa-free policy guide, then recheck an official notice for the actual arrival date. Policy review: August 29, 2026.

Start with Passport Nationality, Purpose and Stay Length

Singaporean, Malaysian and Thai ordinary-passport holders have bilateral arrangements that can permit a stay of up to 30 days. The covered purposes and cumulative limits differ, so nationality alone is not a complete answer.

Singapore: ordinary-passport holders may enter for up to 30 days under the reciprocal agreement effective February 9, 2024. Work, study, journalism and other prior-approval activities need the appropriate visa.

Malaysia: the mutual agreement effective July 17, 2025 covers specified short visits up to 30 days and limits cumulative stays to 90 days in each 180-day period. The passport must have at least six months of validity.

Thailand: the reciprocal agreement effective March 1, 2024 permits each eligible stay up to 30 days, with no more than 90 days in a 180-day period. Longer or prior-approval activities require a visa.

Regional Visa-Free Programs Are Not Nationwide Permission

Hong Kong or Macao to Guangdong

Eligible visitors joining a qualifying tour organized by an approved Hong Kong or Macao agency may use a limited Guangdong group program. The approved route, group handling, entry and exit conditions control; an independent detour can break eligibility.

Hainan

Hainan has a separate 30-day policy for named nationalities entering through eligible Hainan ports and remaining within the permitted scope. Do not assume it authorizes onward travel to the mainland; verify the active nationality list and movement rules.

ASEAN Group Entry to Guilin

A qualifying group of at least two ordinary-passport holders from the named ASEAN countries may enter and leave through Guilin under an approved local receiving agency for a limited stay in Guilin. Independent travelers and routes outside the approved area do not qualify.

Transit Exemptions Require a Real Third-Country Route

24-hour direct transit

Travelers of any nationality may be able to remain in the restricted port area for no more than 24 hours with confirmed international onward transport. Leaving the restricted area requires the border authority to grant a temporary entry permit.

240-hour visa-free transit

The current 240-hour scheme applies only to named nationalities, designated ports and permitted geographic areas. The itinerary must continue to a third country or region; Kuala Lumpur–Shanghai–Kuala Lumpur is not qualifying third-country transit.

Indonesia became eligible for the 240-hour transit policy in June 2025, but that did not create general nationwide visa-free tourism. Singapore is also on the eligible list; Malaysia and Thailand normally rely on their bilateral arrangements for covered short visits.

Read the China visa and entry guide before ticketing. Hold confirmed onward seats, the first accommodation address and a route that remains inside the permitted area; immigration officers make the final decision.

APEC Business Travel Card: Verify the Economy Endorsement

A valid physical or virtual ABTC can facilitate short business entry only when China is an approved economy on that traveler's card and the passport matches. It does not cover tourism by assumption, employment, study or an expired card.

Chinese Permanent Residence Card Holders

A valid Chinese Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card is an independent entry and residence document. Verify that the card and passport identity match, and follow the issuing authority's instructions if either document is lost, renewed or damaged.

Valid Chinese Residence Permit Holders

A valid residence permit issued after the relevant long-stay visa process can support repeated entry within its validity. Check the permit category and expiry; a previous Z, X1, Q1, S1 or J1 visa sticker is not itself proof that the residence permit remains valid.

Mutual Visa-Exemption Agreements and When a Visa Is Still Required

Every agreement has its own passport, purpose, stay and cumulative-use rules. Apply before travel when the passport or purpose is outside them, the planned stay is longer, or work, study, residence or media activity needs approval. Use the visa application checklist; Yun Sky Travel may verify an itinerary but cannot issue a visa or guarantee admission.
