The China–Malaysia Mutual Visa Exemption Agreement has applied since July 17, 2025. Malaysian ordinary-passport holders with at least six months of validity may enter for a covered purpose for up to 30 days per stay, with cumulative stays not exceeding 90 days in any 180-day period. Residence, employment, study and media activity are not covered. Reviewed August 29, 2026.
Passport: use the eligible Malaysian ordinary passport, valid for at least six months, and keep the same identity across flights, hotels and rail tickets.
Trip evidence: carry onward or return transport, first-night accommodation, contact details and evidence matching the declared tourism, business, family or private purpose. These support inspection but do not guarantee admission.
Use the Chinese Embassy in Malaysia's current application notice and its linked service center. The 2025 procedure directs ordinary-passport applicants to complete the online form and upload evidence before in-person submission when the status requests the passport.
Kuala Lumpur Confirm the current center address, hours, holiday calendar and jurisdiction on the official portal.
Penang or another location Do not rely on the legacy address: verify whether the location accepts this category and residence area.
Sabah and Sarawak Check the responsible Chinese consular mission and its announced ordinary-passport channel before traveling to a center.
Apply before travel if the purpose is employment, study, residence, journalism or another prior-approval activity, if the planned stay exceeds 30 days, or if cumulative stays would exceed 90 days in 180. Do not plan to use an emergency extension as a routine way around the agreement.
1. Classify the real purpose
Choose the visa category from the current embassy checklist. Tourism evidence cannot replace a work permit, admission notice or family-status document required for another category.
2. Complete the official online form

5. Wait for the submission instruction
When the portal status requests the passport, follow the center's current instruction for originals, fingerprints and fees. Short-term fingerprint exemptions may be time-limited and do not remove other requirements.
6. Retain the receipt
Research early, but file within the current window specified by the mission. Build in time for online review, submission, holidays and possible supplementary checks; no travel agency can guarantee a fixed decision date.
The old 2023 fee table is not a safe 2026 quote. Confirm the current amount and payment instructions after the official portal identifies the service and category.

Enter Before The last date available for entry is different from the last lawful day of stay.
Entries A trip to Hong Kong or Macao and return to the mainland can consume another entry unless a valid exemption independently applies.
Duration of Stay
This is the permitted stay after each entry and must be read together with the admission record. Final check: the issuing mission decides the visa and border inspection decides admission. Correct any identity or validity discrepancy before departure.

For a first trip, Guangzhou and nearby Guilin route planning can reduce long backtracking; Beijing–Xi'an–Shanghai suits travelers prioritizing imperial history. Allow station security and city transfers, leave a buffer before the international flight, and use the Chinese cuisine guide to plan dietary communication rather than assuming one national menu.
