Giant Panda Zoos in Asia

Giant pandas have lived at several Asian zoos through time-limited cooperative agreements with Chinese institutions. Those agreements expire, animals return and exhibits can close, so a historical list is not automatically a current viewing guide. Check each zoo's official animal page and booking notice immediately before travel; use our panda planning hub for China-based alternatives.

The sections below explain what each institution represents and clearly mark locations whose panda era has ended.

Japan — Ueno Zoo, Tokyo (Historical; No Giant Pandas Currently)

Zoo context Ueno Zoo opened in 1882 and is Japan's oldest modern zoo. Its central Tokyo location made it one of Asia's most visible panda destinations for decades.

Current status : no giant pandas are currently on display.
Shin Shin
and Ri Ri returned to China in 2024.
Their twins Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei returned in January 2026, according to the Tokyo zoo's official announcement.
Do not book a Tokyo trip on the assumption that an old Ueno panda article remains current.

Japan — Kobe Oji Zoo (Historical)

Zoo context : Kobe Oji Zoo is an established city zoo with other animal exhibits and a long public association with giant pandas.

Panda status : the former exhibit is part of its history, not a current panda guarantee.
Kojin, also known as Xing Xing,
died in 2010; the zoo's later resident Tan Tan also died, ending the display.

Indonesia — Taman Safari Indonesia

Giant panda at Zoo Negara near Kuala Lumpur

Zoo context : the Bogor-area safari park lies south of Jakarta in West Java, not in central Jakarta. Travel time is highly traffic-dependent, so it should be treated as a dedicated excursion.

Panda context : confirm the current exhibit and access on the park's official site.
Cai Tao
and Hu Chun

arrived from China in 2017 under a conservation partnership.

Malaysia — Zoo Negara, Kuala Lumpur

Zoo context : Zoo Negara is in the Greater Kuala Lumpur area and is reachable as a half-day or longer city excursion. Entry products and panda-house access can change.

Current status : Malaysia began a new panda-cooperation phase in 2026; verify opening and viewing arrangements before visiting.
Chen Xing
and Xiao Yue are the names reported for the new pair.

Older articles often list Xing Xing and Liang Liang, whose Malaysian stay belonged to the previous agreement.
That earlier pair arrived in 2014 and produced cubs in Malaysia.
Returned cubs
are normally transferred to China according to the applicable agreement and age plan.

Thailand — Chiang Mai Zoo (Historical)

Giant panda at Everland Panda World in South Korea

Zoo context : Chiang Mai Zoo occupies a hillside near Doi Suthep and continues to operate with many species.

Panda status : it no longer has giant pandas.
Chuang Chuang
died in 2019, and Lin Hui died in 2023.

The pair arrived in 2003 and became well known in Thailand.
Their cub Lin Bing was born in 2009.
Lin Bing later returned to China, illustrating why historical birth records do not establish current availability.

South Korea — Everland Panda World

Zoo context: Everland is a large resort south of Seoul with a dedicated Panda World. The scale of the resort and advance-entry system make route planning important.

Panda context:
Ai Bao and Le Bao anchor the breeding story; verify the current family and any timed-entry rules.
Their cub Fu Bao became widely known before returning to China in 2024.
For comparison with changing American institutions, see panda zoos in the United States.

Singapore — River Wonders

Zoo context: River Wonders, formerly River Safari, is part of the Mandai wildlife precinct. Its Giant Panda Forest is an indoor climate-controlled exhibit, useful in Singapore's humid weather.

Panda context:
Kai Kai
and Jia Jia arrived in 2012 under a conservation agreement.
The pair produced cub Le Le in Singapore; resident and viewing status should still be checked before travel. For institutions beyond Asia, continue to panda zoos in Europe and Oceania.
