Best Places to Visit in Guilin

Choose the Guilin experience you want

A Guilin trip is usually a choice between river scenery, Yangshuo countryside and the Longji rice terraces. These experiences sit in different places; doing all of them well takes more than a single day.

  • Li River and Yangshuo: make the river journey part of the trip, then leave time for a countryside route or a relaxed evening.
  • Longji terraces: allow a separate day or overnight stay because mountain roads and walking are part of the experience.
  • Guilin city: choose a cave, riverfront walk or city viewpoint for a shorter arrival or departure day.

River levels, visibility and walking conditions vary with weather. Confirm the service operating on your dates and keep a flexible alternative rather than promising a particular view or cruise route.

Build a Guilin itinerary →

Guilin, Yangshuo and Longji form different outings. Choose the landscape or activity that matters most, then give each area enough time instead of treating the following list as stops to complete in order.

Li River: make the journey part of the day

A Li River cruise or confirmed river route is an experience in its own right, not simply transport to Yangshuo. Check the current departure pier, route, arrival point and onward transfer before booking a one-day plan. Water level, weather and operating notices can affect what is available.

If you want countryside time after the river journey, keep the evening or an overnight stay in Yangshuo rather than adding several distant sights.

Longji terraces: allow travel and walking time

The terraces are a separate mountain outing from central Guilin and Yangshuo. Allow for the road journey, walking between viewpoints and weather that may reduce visibility. An overnight stay can be useful when photography or a slower village visit matters more than covering another attraction.

Field color follows local planting and harvest cycles. Ask about current conditions if a particular scene is important to your trip.

Reed Flute Cave: an indoor option

A cave visit can balance a city day when outdoor conditions are less comfortable. It is a different experience from a river or mountain outing, so choose it for geology, lighting and a shorter indoor visit rather than because it appears on every checklist. Check the current admission and route before travel.

Elephant Trunk Hill: a city landmark

This is a practical choice for a shorter Guilin city block. Its value is in seeing a familiar riverfront landmark without committing a full day. Pair it with another nearby city activity if your arrival time allows, while leaving enough margin for luggage and the transfer from your station or airport.

Yangshuo West Street: an evening choice

West Street works best as an evening stroll or dining area after a countryside day. It can be lively, especially on busy dates. Travelers seeking a quiet night should check their hotel's exact street and recent noise reviews; a room described as “in Yangshuo” may be very different from one directly on West Street.

Sun and Moon Pagodas: a short city stop

The pagodas fit a Guilin city walk and can be viewed from the surrounding area. Decide whether to include a paid interior visit after checking current access and your available time. They do not substitute for the Li River or Yangshuo if karst landscapes are the main reason for your trip.

Yulong River: choose a confirmed route

The Yulong River offers a slower Yangshuo countryside experience. Raft sections, boarding points, age or safety rules and operating windows can change with water and weather. Reserve a route only after confirming where it starts and ends and how you will return to your hotel.

If rafting is unavailable, a countryside walk or vehicle route can still make the day worthwhile.

Xianggong Hill: a viewpoint with a transfer

This viewpoint can appeal to photographers, but it requires planning beyond a quick stop in central Yangshuo. Check road access, walking steps, weather and the light you hope to photograph. Mist or rain may hide the view; avoid promising a particular sunrise or adding it after a fully booked river day.

Moon Hill: check access before hiking

Moon Hill is one of the Yangshuo karst landmarks, but current access and trail conditions should be confirmed before making it the day's main hike. A distant view may be enough for travelers who prefer a gentle countryside route. Choose one substantial walk instead of stacking several climbs in a short day.

Xingping: a separate river-area choice

Xingping can be paired with a suitable Li River route or a focused road trip. Check the arrival point and onward travel before assuming that every cruise stops where you need it. Its streets and river scenery are most enjoyable when you leave time to walk rather than rushing onward to the Yulong River area.

Put the areas into a realistic itinerary

With one full day, choose either a Guilin city visit or one confirmed Yangshuo outing. With two to three full days, add a river journey and countryside time. Longji usually deserves its own day or overnight stay. Count arrival, departure and hotel-change time separately from complete sightseeing days.

If river conditions or tickets change, keep one alternative that remains in the same area instead of replacing the day with a long cross-region transfer.
