The departure arrangement must work from Shangri-La or include an explicitly planned onward journey. Do not assume a morning local flight will always connect neatly with a separate international ticket. The airport guide helps compare gateways and connections.
Two full Dali days leave time for a lake outing and a village interest without repeating similar stops. Three Lijiang nights create one cultural day and one optional excursion day. Decide whether that excursion is Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, a gorge viewpoint or another interest, using the Lijiang stay guide.
Keep the possible mountain visit separate from the decision to sleep in Shangri-La. They involve different places and different elevations. An itinerary that calls both simply “mountain scenery” leaves out information the traveler needs.

Retain the nine nights as two in Kunming, three in Dali and four in Lijiang if you want Stone Forest, lake time and more cultural depth. Another option is a Shaxi stay between Dali and Lijiang, with a separate road arrangement. Removing the higher city does not require replacing it with another demanding excursion; a longer stay can be the purpose.
The four-city version adds a transfer to Shangri-La, two nights at a higher base and a different departure decision. The three-city version can use two nights in Kunming, three in Dali and four in Lijiang, still totaling nine nights. It gives more time within the classic corridor.
