Kunming is the capital of Yunnan Province in southwestern China. For visitors, that means a substantial working city and an important gateway to investigate, not simply a stop between the airport and Dali. Its urban life, lakeside setting and regional connections help explain a different side of Yunnan from the old towns farther northwest.

Central neighborhoods, Dianchi, the airport and railway stations are distinct places. A booking labeled “Kunming” does not establish that it is near the city walk or departure point you want. Use the exact hotel address and the entrance shown on the confirmation.
Kunming Railway Station and Kunming South are separate railway stations. Kunming Changshui is the airport to investigate for current passenger arrivals; older references to Wujiaba should not guide an airport transfer. Kunming offers regional food, markets and cultural venues alongside ordinary urban life. It can introduce subjects you later explore elsewhere, but a staged cultural display in the capital is not a substitute for understanding a particular community in its own setting.
