Qinghai–Tibet Railway Stations: Passenger Planning Guide

The Qinghai–Tibet Railway includes passenger stations, freight facilities, passing loops, technical stations and unstaffed operating points. Historical sources often count 85 stations between Xining and Lhasa, but that number is not a promise that a passenger train stops 85 times or that every named station is open to visitors. The practical hubs are Xining for ticketing and plateau entry, Golmud before the highest section, Nagqu for northern Tibet and Lhasa as the main terminal. Three checks before relying on any station name: (1) confirm the current train number and stop pattern through China's official railway ticketing channel; (2) confirm whether the station handles passengers rather than freight or technical operations; and (3) coordinate Tibet permits, pickup and onward itinerary before ticket purchase. Altitude planning: Xining is already above 2,000 metres, Golmud is around 2,800 metres, Nagqu is about 4,500 metres and Lhasa is roughly 3,650 metres. A train's oxygen-support system does not guarantee acclimatization. Headache, nausea and fatigue can occur; confusion, loss of coordination, chest pain or breathlessness at rest requires immediate staff assistance and medical evaluation. Do not leave a train at a technical stop, and never walk on tracks or cross operational areas for photographs. Transfer planning: station names can resemble nearby towns while the actual terminal lies outside the center. Arrange a licensed pickup, allow time for identity and permit checks, and keep passport, permit and ticket names identical.
