How to Apply for a Chinese Visa in Northern Europe

Chinese entry rules changed materially after this page was first published. Some Northern European ordinary-passport holders may now qualify for a 30-day unilateral visa-free stay, while others still need a visa or may use a tightly defined transit exemption. Start with nationality, passport type, purpose and intended stay—not an old country list. Reviewed August 29, 2026.

Do You Need a Chinese Visa? Use This Decision Order

Check the current National Immigration Administration and Chinese embassy notices first. The China visa-free policy guide explains the difference between unilateral visa-free entry and the 240-hour transit scheme; neither covers paid work, long-term study or journalism.

Use Official Sources, Not an Undated Address List

Rules, appointment systems, biometrics and service locations can change. Confirm the Chinese embassy or consulate responsible for your legal residence, then follow the center it currently designates. Save the dated notice and appointment confirmation.

How to Apply for a Chinese Visa from Northern Europe

Step 1 — classify the trip

Write down passport nationality and type, legal residence, main purpose, planned arrival, final departure and every mainland re-entry. A residence permit in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway or Sweden does not give the holder that country's passport privileges.

Step 2 — test visa-free eligibility

  1. For an ordinary passport, compare the named nationality, permitted purpose and maximum stay with the current official notice. Border inspection makes the final admission decision, so carry evidence consistent with the declared trip.
  2. Step 3 — test transit separately
  3. The 240-hour transit policy requires an eligible nationality, an approved port, a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region and travel within the permitted area. A return to the same country is not third-country transit.

Step 4 — choose the correct visa category when required

Tourism commonly uses an L visa; commercial activity, family visits, study and employment use different categories and evidence. Read the China visa and entry guide before selecting a category from a blog summary.

Step 5 — identify the responsible mission

Use the embassy or consulate's official jurisdiction page for your place of legal residence. Do not mail a passport to an address copied from this article without confirming that the location still accepts that application type.

Step 6 — complete the current online process

Use only the application portal linked by the responsible mission. Enter names exactly as printed in the passport machine-readable zone and disclose previous Chinese visas, passports and nationalities when the form asks.

Step 7 — assemble evidence

  1. Prepare the valid original passport, identity-page copy, compliant photograph, signed form and purpose-specific documents. Tourism evidence may include transport, accommodation or a qualifying invitation; the current checklist controls.
  2. Step 8 — check biometrics and appearance rules
  3. Fingerprint exemptions and in-person requirements change by age, passport type, visa category and policy period. Treat a previous exemption as historical, not as permission for a new application.
  4. Step 9 — submit, pay and retain proof
  5. Fees and accepted payment methods vary by nationality and location. Keep the submission receipt and collection instruction; redact passport numbers before sharing either document with a travel company.
  6. Step 10 — inspect the issued visa: before booking non-refundable services, check name, passport number, validity, entries and permitted duration. A visa does not guarantee admission or replace a controlled-area permit.

Timing Without False Guarantees

Start research before committing to restricted tickets, but follow the mission's current filing window. Processing can extend when supplementary evidence, an interview or administrative review is required. Passport and Booking Consistency

Use one passport identity across flights, hotels, rail tickets and the application. If a passport is renewed after approval, ask the issuing mission how the old visa and new passport must be handled. Children and Group Applications

Each traveler needs an independently valid entry basis. Check parental-consent, birth-certificate and guardianship requirements for minors with the mission and carrier; family relationship alone is not a visa category. What Yun Sky Travel Can Verify

We can supply an itinerary and service confirmation for a booked trip, but we do not issue visas, waive fingerprints or guarantee approval. Use the visa application checklist to separate operator documents from government decisions. Where to Apply: Denmark

Confirm whether the Copenhagen visa service center or the embassy currently accepts your passport type and category. Verify its address, holiday calendar, appointment rule and collection method on the official page. Where to Apply: Finland

Applicants resident in Finland should follow the Chinese mission's Finland jurisdiction instructions. A Helsinki location mentioned in an old guide may have moved or changed hours. Where to Apply: Iceland

Iceland has historically used a different handling arrangement from larger Nordic countries. Confirm directly whether ordinary-passport applications go to the embassy, a service provider or another announced channel.

Where to Apply: Norway

Use the embassy's current Norway application notice and do not assume Oslo walk-in service. Confirm jurisdiction if you live in Svalbard or hold a passport issued elsewhere. Where to Apply: Sweden

Check which mission or service center covers your registered residence. Older Stockholm and Gothenburg listings are not reliable evidence of today's submission location.

Residents Who Hold Another Nationality Eligibility follows the passport presented at entry, while application jurisdiction normally follows lawful residence. Carry residence evidence if the responsible mission requires it.

Hong Kong and Macao Are Separate Entry Systems A mainland visa or exemption does not automatically decide admission to Hong Kong or Macao. A later mainland re-entry is assessed again; design the route before buying transport.

Tibet and Other Controlled Areas A Chinese visa or visa-free entry is not a Tibet permit. Permit timing and route restrictions must be checked before rail or air tickets become non-refundable.

Travel Planning with Yun Sky Travel
