Dawn and dusk photographs are won before the colour arrives. Transport, gate hours, trail time, tide, fog and a safe way back matter more than a prediction of “perfect light.” The six destinations below demand different preparation, from mountain paths at Huangshan to working mudflats at Xiapu.

Use the detailed guides for Huangshan photography, Jinshanling sunrise and sunset and Yuanyang Hani rice terraces after choosing a theme. Each place rewards at least two sessions; one is for learning the scene and the other is for responding rather than searching.
Record the legal entry point, the route from vehicle to tripod position, steps or drop-offs, toilets and the time needed to return. Mark two compositions: the preferred one and a safe alternative if the viewpoint is occupied or the cloud direction changes. Confirm gate hours directly; “sunrise attraction” does not always mean every path opens before dawn.
At Xiapu, a tide table and local working conditions are as important as sunrise time. At Yuanyang, water-filled fields and fog determine reflections. At Huangshan, the cloud sea is a weather event, not a scheduled attraction. Write the uncertainty into the itinerary rather than hiding it in small print.
Use the histogram and highlight warning because a bright LCD in darkness can make an underexposed frame look correct. Bracket when the sun and foreground exceed the sensor's range, but keep one natural exposure as a reference. Graduated filters work best on relatively clean horizons; bracketing is usually safer where mountains, towers or trees cross the sky.
Set focus before the contrast becomes difficult, then confirm it at magnification. A sturdy tripod is useful, but only if it does not narrow a path or cross a barrier. Carry a headlamp with a red or low setting, warm layers, rain protection, spare batteries and the means to navigate without mobile service.
Stay behind barriers, do not climb unrestored wall sections, do not enter fields or tidal work areas without permission and never place a tripod where another visitor can trip over it in darkness.
Drones are not a substitute for scouting. China has real-name registration, operating and airspace requirements, while scenic areas may impose stricter bans. Verify current national and local rules for the exact date and site. Wind over ridges and people below also create risks beyond legal compliance.
